Why Use Sand on Snowy Paths?

Snow Plowing Done Right!

Have you noticed the municipalities in your area plowing the snow and throwing sand out at the same time? Probably, you think to yourself: “Does sand melt snow?” Well, the short answer is “No, it doesn’t, but it affects it.” If you are curious to know how this material affects snow and more about my snow plowing service, please stay on this page.

Many contractors use sand and even grit and other similar materials after a blizzard. The snow piles could be so big that you cannot open the front door. Then, you have to hire a contractor to help you with the snow removal and make your property safer. Throwing sand on the pavement has one main goal – it creates traction. The sand itself doesn’t reduce the temperature of the iced pavement, nor does it prevent ice build-up. However, this is the perfect material for good friction. Whether you are a pedestrian or a vehicle owner, you will feel relief when using such a pavement because you won’t slip.

Some companies use rock salt (sodium chloride) for this purpose, but it has the ability to remain liquid at a very low temperature. Pure ocean salt causes ice to melt as its molecules dissolve the film of liquid water always present in ice, but this way, the amount of water increases.

Thus, in really cold weather, specialists recommend using sand instead of rock salt because sand and grit have the ability to absorb the moisture present in ice and create “dry” skid-resistant surfaces. On a busy road, this application is a must. It helps vehicles with the traction and the driver is able to stop suddenly if they have to.

Another reason for using sand is that when it is heated by the sun, it will help to quickly defrost the ice. Sitting on the top of snow, it will absorb the warmth and the melting process will start.
